How to Choose the Best Router

(Third in a Three-Part Series)

If you’ve ever been frustrated by a slow Internet connection, you’ve probably toyed with the idea of upgrading your Internet service or getting a faster computer. But there’s an important piece of the puzzle that’s often overlooked: your router.

Routers play an important role in optimizing connectivity speeds.

And if you haven’t upgraded your router in awhile, it could be the culprit for lags and longer load times. Older routers run old wireless standards and upgrading to a current model will improve your Wi-Fi capabilities.

Let’s say you’ve read our blog post about how to choose the right Internet speed (you have, right?!) and you’ve adjusted your service accordingly. But maybe you still notice that your Internet speed isn’t quite up to par with what you expected. This is likely due to having a router that isn’t suited to your gaming, streaming, surfing, and/or working needs.

So, how do you find out if you have an old or new router? Check the router itself.  You’ll see numbers like these:

  • 11ac — runs the newest standards
  • 11n — a bit older, but still functional
  • 11g — pretty dated, so it’s probably time to consider replacing it

Other versions not mentioned here are definitely dated and should be replaced to optimize your connectivity.

Wireless routers are an important piece of hardware and occasionally need upgrading, especially if you’ve tried everything else and still aren’t getting Internet as fast as you want or need.

If you need to upgrade your router, we’ve got several newer models in stock. Stop by one of our Solutions Centers near you to shop our selection!
